Frequently asked questions

Yes. In many cases, an existing precast concrete wall can be raised to increase privacy, improve security, or enhance the appearance of a property. However, not every wall is suitable for raising, and the correct method depends on the condition of the existing wall, the desired height, and the long-term performance expected from the installation.

At East Rand Walling (Pty) Ltd, we offer two methods of raising an existing precast wall. While both methods are effective when applied correctly, one is considered a cost-effective budget solution, while the other provides the best long-term structural performance.

The most economical way to raise a precast wall is by extending the existing concrete posts rather than replacing them. This is achieved by inserting an angle iron extension between the existing post and the top slab. The extension securely supports an additional extension post, allowing one or two extra concrete slabs to be installed, increasing the wall height by approximately 300 mm or 600 mm.

The extension post is secured using an angle iron insert, after which the additional concrete slabs are installed. The completed extension is then grouted to improve rigidity and provide additional support. While this method is structurally sound when applied to a suitable wall, the final appearance can vary. Existing precast walls manufactured by different suppliers often have slight variations in slab thickness, post dimensions, profiles, and finishes. These differences can make perfect alignment difficult to achieve, even with careful installation by experienced erectors.

For this reason, we generally do not recommend this method for street-facing or highly visible boundary walls where appearance is a priority. Instead, it is best suited to side and rear boundary walls where functionality, privacy, and cost-effectiveness are the primary considerations.

Using this system, most standard precast walls can be safely raised to a maximum finished height of approximately 2.4 metres, provided the existing wall is structurally sound and suitable for extension.

Before any work begins, the existing wall should be inspected to determine whether it is suitable for raising.

A wall should only be raised if:

  • The existing wall is standing straight and plumb.
  • The concrete posts and slabs remain structurally sound.
  • The existing foundations are adequate to support the additional height and increased wind loading.

If the wall is leaning or out of plumb, it should first be professionally straightened before any extension work is undertaken. Likewise, walls with weak, damaged, or undersized foundations should not be raised using the extension method, as the additional height increases the forces acting on the existing structure.

Although the extension method has been used successfully for many years and provides an economical way to increase wall height, it remains a budget solution rather than the preferred long-term approach.

Where appearance, structural integrity, and maximum service life are priorities, we recommend rebuilding the wall using full-length concrete posts designed for the new finished height. This involves carefully dismantling the existing wall, installing new posts with correctly sized foundations, and rebuilding the wall to the desired height.

In many cases, the existing concrete slabs can be reused if they remain in good condition, with only the additional slabs required to achieve the new height being supplied as new. This approach provides a stronger, more durable structure with improved long-term stability, a more uniform appearance, and a finished product
that is virtually indistinguishable from a newly installed wall.

The best solution depends on the condition of your existing wall, your budget, and your expectations for the finished result. Our experienced team will inspect your wall, assess its suitability for raising, and recommend the most appropriate solution based on the wall’s condition and the site’s requirements.

Whether you choose the economical extension method or a complete rebuild, East Rand Walling (Pty) Ltd applies the same commitment to quality workmanship, premium materials, and professional installation. Our goal is to provide a precast wall that delivers lasting security, privacy, and value for many years to come

The installation time for a precast concrete wall depends on the length of the wall, site conditions, ground levels, access, and the wall type selected. In most cases, standard residential precast walling projects can be completed within one to three days, while larger commercial and industrial walling projects may take longer.

As South Africa’s oldest and largest precast walling manufacturer and installer, East Rand Walling has the resources, equipment, and experienced installation teams to complete projects efficiently while maintaining the highest quality standards. A site inspection allows us to provide a more accurate installation timeline.

Colombo walling is one of South Africa’s most popular decorative precast concrete walling styles. It features a textured stone-like finish that provides both privacy and an attractive appearance, making it ideal for residential, commercial, and industrial properties.

Colombo walling combines the strength and durability of precast concrete with an aesthetically pleasing design that complements a wide range of architectural styles. It is available in various heights and can be enhanced with decorative columns, steel inserts, electric fencing, and security features.

East Rand Walling manufactures and installs high-quality Colombo walling systems designed to provide long-lasting security, privacy, and curb appeal.

East Rand Walling understands that damaged walls and fencing can create immediate security risks. We therefore prioritise emergency wall repairs and emergency precast wall replacement requests wherever possible.

Response times depend on the location, extent of the damage, and current workload, but our dedicated repair teams strive to attend to urgent situations as quickly as possible. We regularly assist homeowners, businesses, schools, factories, warehouses, and body corporates with emergency repairs resulting from vehicle impacts, storm damage, vandalism, theft, and structural failures.

For urgent assistance, we recommend contacting our office immediately so that we can assess the situation and arrange the fastest possible response.

Precast concrete walling is one of the lowest-maintenance fencing solutions available. Unlike timber fencing, precast concrete walls do not rot, warp, or suffer termite damage. They are also highly resistant to weathering, corrosion, and normal environmental conditions.

While no walling system is completely maintenance-free, quality precast walling generally requires very little upkeep beyond occasional cleaning and routine inspections. Where walls are painted, repainting may be required periodically depending on environmental conditions and aesthetic preferences.

East Rand Walling manufactures durable precast concrete walling designed to provide decades of reliable performance with minimal maintenance requirements.
